Diarrhoea in Budgies

Picture
Diarrhoea in budgies is a descriptive term and not a diagnosis. The term diarrhoea in Budgies refers to loss of the normal  soft formed cylindrical or tubular and coiled shape of the dark brown/olive green component of budgie droppings.
There is much more that you can learn by buying and exploring "Doctor Ross Perry's Bird Poop Book" (click here).
There are many changes that we may observe in the faecal component of bird droppings.
passing visible seeds or bits of seeds in the faeces is often associated with gizzard dysfunction.
sticky or tacky faeces is often a sign of an enteritis.
black or dark coffee brown faeces often signals proventriculus or upper intestinal haemorrhage.
dark green mucoid scant faeces can accompany inappetence, enteritis, liver disease, chlamydophila, worms and other illnesses.
bubbly faeces can signal psittacine beak and feather disease (circovirus infection) and enteritis.
pale pasty bulky faeces suggests malabsorption, maldigestion, pancreatic insufficiency, megabacteria or giardia infection.
"popcorn" faeces are pale and bulky and look like popcorn. They can indicate liver or pancreatic insufficiency.
visible worms in or on the faeces.
hard, dry cylindrical faeces is the main sign of constipation.
“spaghetti droppings” are those that hang as long strands from the backside/vent after a day or more of your cockatiel being given psyllium husk as part of the management of heavy metal poisoning.
external constipation is where a mixture of soft tacky faeces, urine and urates becomes a foul mess matted in the feathers over and around the vent or cloaca of very sick budgies.

There is much much more to learn about diarrhoea in budgies. You can learn more by buying my books "Doctor Ross Perry's Budgie Book" and "Caring for Birds with Love and Gratitude".
